They performed medical scans, which showed a laceration on his spleen, and internal bleeding developed. They told Nine that he had been taken to a Sydney hospital, where he was in intensive care. He was medically stable, his condition improving while under the supervision of specialists in Mumbai, the BCCI said.

Crucially, the ICU admission in question was linked to an injury in 2025. Do not treat it as a 2026 health status quo report.
However, Iyer had returned to international cricket by 2026 and was captaining India in T20Is. This participation in India’s 2026 international season, including the latest West Indies series, means that he was back on the field.

Why Shreyas Iyer Is Important to Indian Cricket
Even as batting greats have ebbed and flowed in Indian cricket down the decades, raw talent has never been an issue; finding batters who can combine quality with leadership experience, however, has proven much more difficult.
Shreyas Iyer brings both.
He has batted from different positions, dealt with IPL captaincy, and endured the rigors of international cricket. And his career has taught him a little about coming back from injury and being overlooked for selection.
His next stage of his career will be heavily intertwined with T20I captaincy. As the next generation of India’s batters come through thick and fast, Iyer’s ability to feed off fellow wannabes may become as important as his run scoring.
